USPTO Requirement of Filing in DOCX
The United States Patent and Trademark Office announced in 2022 that it is switching to DOCX for patent filings. DOCX is a file format based on open standards including Extensible Markup Language (XML). Also, DOCX is supported by word processing applications such as Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Office Online, LibreOffice, and Pages for Mac.
For new application filings not filed in DOCX format, a fee will be required. As of February 2023, the fee is being delayed.
